The Science of... : Science of Survival branding and environmental graphics

The Science of Survival exhibition is a fun and futuristic interactive experience based around environmental issues. It launched at Science Museum in April 2008 and will tour the world for three years. ico were the lead design agency on the project and a key part of our role was to create the overall brand and design the exhibition graphics.

Our Solution

The brand identity and theme takes stylistic cues from the world of computer gaming. ico’s approach was to create a ‘game of life’ that presents the challenge ‘Your Planet Needs You’. Working with writer Phil Hughes, a team of four characters was created as virtual guides from the year 2050 to accompany visitors through the exhibition. Eco, Dug, Tek and Buz have been given distinct personalities representing four differing schools of thought on the issues.

The exhibition comprises seven colour-coded theme areas: Briefing, Drinking, Eating, Enjoying, Moving, Building and Future City. Each area includes a series of innovative objects, interactive games and design activities that have been developed in consultation with scientists and researchers.
